We are training artists here, Mr. Hummel. Performers who are not afraid to show their vulnerability, and yes, even their heart.
See, and this perfectly illustrates why I absolutely CANNOT shit on Mme. Tibideaux for that comment. Because look at the settings in which Kurt sings with his whole heart and moves us to tears. Until “Being Alive,” he only does it in small, intimate, relatively safe places (the choir room, Warblers rehearsal), or with no audience at all (“Rose’s Turn”).
His stage performances and his auditions, by and large, had been much more about show and spectacle and giving us a loud declaration of his abilities. (“I’m the Greatest Star,” “Not the Boy Next Door,” even “Some People”) They’re amazing in their own right, and they are still very much Kurt. He is, as ever, unapologetically himself.
But Kurt is careful with his heart. He doesn’t let just anyone see him like this. “Being Alive” is an incredibly brave, bare performance to do in front of a room full of strangers who are explicitly there to judge him.
And the one that isn’t included in this set is, to me, the icing on the cake that is the growth of Kurt Hummel. “I’m Still Here” is personal, it’s daring, but with a whole different flavor of mature confidence.
Watching Kurt’s development as an artist & performer these past two seasons especially has been so wonderful. I like that you mention “I’m Still Here” at the end, because it really is a synthesis of his two different performance styles, both of which are authentic, but the fusion of his vulnerability with his playfulness is tremendous, and a perfect way to claim his complex, unique voice. I love that we’ve seen this story. <3
You say not all men are monsters?
Imagine a bowl of M&Ms. 10% of them are poisoned.
Go ahead. Eat a handful.
Not all M&Ms are poison.— The Frogman nails it. (via wlcometothemyscira)
